Capturing the Story

Get Out Get Active Case Study

In Autumn 2021 Active Humber worked with Age UK Hull to secure funding from the Football Association to develop walking football session for people aged 50+ living in Hull and East Riding. This funding combined with Get Out Get Active funding hosted by Active Humber has helped to develop 4 walking football sessions across Hull and East and Riding. These sessions have proven to be very successful with a combination of veteran football players and new starters to the sport.

With session growing in popularity, we are planning a Humber wide walking football tournament between teams from Hull, East Riding, North and North East Lincolnshire. These will celebrate how walking football improves health and wellbeing and helping people to make new friends.

Returning to Activity in North and North East Lincolnshire

The Get Out Get Active programme in North & North East Lincolnshire is a physical activity programme supporting the most inactive 55-74-year old’s to become more active by developing an inclusive and intergenerational offer.

In response to COVID-19 the programme has focused on a couple of new ways to engage the key target audience; Active Humber developed Stay Active at Home pages to encourage people affected by lockdown to be physically active in their own homes, alongside this a Stay Active at Home GOGA leaflet was developed and distributed with food/care packages, community emergency response teams and other partners agencies to support those who may not have access to the internet to undertake light exercises in their homes.

Since restrictions have eased Active Humber have been working with partners in North East Lincolnshire to develop bowls and croquet sessions at a local park in Grimsby. Sessions run twice a week and are fully inclusive. The sessions have attracted a range of ages and abilities and are fully adapted to cater for the range of participants that attend.

Friendship at Home

Through GOGA funding, Friendship at home have delivered hybrid sessions at their community Hall in Humberston.

These hybrid sessions are a combination of face-to-face delivery and people accessing the class virtually from home.

For those people shielding or unable to leave their homes, it has been a great way for people to stay active and keep in touch.

“The sessions have been a huge success and we are now looking at expanding our offer to other sites in North East Lincolnshire. Working with Active Humber we have been rewarding people with free subscriptions to their Tv.Fit offer. This has given our members the opportunity to do something different on the days when there is no hybrid delivery. As an organisation we saw the importance of helping people get online and we have recruited an IT officer to help people use laptops, ipads etc”
