Children and Young People
Here we look back at all the events we have held throughout the past year
4th May 2021 – Commonwealth Challenge
This was A virtual Challenge spanning the whole summer term. Page two of the resource is a map of the world with a 50 point virtual journey from Australia (the location of the previous Games) to the UK – the site for the 2022 games.
The Commonwealth Challenge aims to ensure that Humber Area primary school children are as healthy and active as possible this summer term.
We developed a free resource that signposted schools and students to some great activity challenges and there were prizes to be won!
Some of the challenges were from local providers, and some linked to the geography curriculum to help children learn about the countries/cultures that will be visiting Birmingham for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Each challenge is listed underneath the map.
21st June - 25th June Humber School Games
The School Games Programme was launched in 2012 as a legacy to the London Olympics. It is funded by Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust via 43 Active Partnerships across the UK. It is a government led programme designed to deliver school sport to all young people and is free of charge* to all schools.
To coincide with national school sports week, In collaboration with the SGO's from across the Humber we have created Humber School Games week. A variety of bespoke and generic resources have been created (accessed via the above link) for schools to access to set up their activities for the week. E-certificates can also be found here and packs have been sent to all the 118 schools registered including SG value stickers and medals and re-usable bibs for young leaders. A celebration plaque for each school to display was also included in each pack engraved with the name of their school. In total it was reported 31782 children took part in this across Humber Schools.

This was a fun non competitive event designed to celebrate schools coming out to events again. It involved a fun run followed by a host of activities ran by Young Leaders from a local school and also a local college as well as representation from the county FA. All students and teachers were encouraged to wear their brightest clothes.
9th November - Southbank Secondary School Girls Carousel
The Southbank Carousel was the first event of its kind as part of the 21/22 School Games Programme new remit for tackling inequalities, targeting underrepresented groups, and focusing on the least active.
Local insight showed that activity levels dropped significantly in Secondary School Girls, this may be due to body changes, image consciousness, pressures within that cohort etc.
Schools in North and North East Lincolnshire were asked to bring their least active girls from Year 9/10, those lacking in confidence or those who had become disengaged from PE.
This event was held and supported by Lincs Inspire at a local authority Leisure Centre and offered less traditional sports to give students the opportunity to try something new in an environment outside of school. The event was fun, non-competitive a non-pressured environment where no one would be judged on ability and no activities were mandatory.
The day was a great success and some of the feedback received proved that we had achieved what we set out to do.

14th January 2022 – Northbank Secondary School Girls Carousel
Following the success of the event on the Southbank in November 2021. This saw our second ever Secondary Girls Carousel Event at Beverley Leisure Centre.
Despite Covid restrictions and school staffing levels reducing numbers somewhat, the event was another great success. The students got to take part in Kurling, Aerobics, Yoga, Spike Ball, Volleyball and some got the chance to try out the equipment in the Fitness Suite. The purpose of the event was to
a) Give these students an opportunity to represent their school
b) Introduce them to leisure centres and their concept
c) Give them an opportunity to try some non PE curriculum activities
We received some great feedback from the participants and teachers and have had requests to plan further events.
26th January 2022 - Special Schools Multi Sport Event
This event has been running annually for around 10 years now and is always hugely popular. It is open to all special schools and is accesible to a huge range of abilities (and disabilities).
Some of the sports include:
All sports are non competitive and every student receives a medal and certificate. We had the big Active Humber mascot there and this year we had a world champion dwarf power lifter as a special guest, who joined in with the children and did an amazing inspiring talk plus Q&A session at lunchtime, to show the kids that disability should not be seen as a barrier and anything is possible.
60+ attendees from 8 special schools
3rd February 2022 - Humber County Finals of Secondary Badminton
This is another annual event that we host and one of the few Humber competitions we have kept in the School Games Calender this year under the new regime. This host the winners of all the Local authority rounds of KS3 Girls, KS3 Boys, KS4 Girls and KS4 Boys. In order to make this less elite and more in tune with the new remit of School Games, we also have another league for non club players. Feedback from schools has been excellent around this as they say these kids would not normally get the opportunity to compete in a county final as they are not the elite.
8th February 2022 - Northbank Leaders Workshop for Mainstream and SEN
A dual faceted Young Sports Leaders camp for consisting of "Young Coach Activator" and "Step in to Sport" elements. One for mainstream leaders and one adapted for SEN Kids. 30 kids on each element learning the fundamentals of how to engage younger children and peers into sport with the view to them taking this knowledge back to school and putting it in place.
8th February 2022 - Northbank Leaders Workshop for Mainstream and SEN
This is part of our Commonwealth Games Legacy Funding Commitment and a CPD Workshop for special schools, SGO's and day centres as well as a cohort of Y13 students to come along and learn how to work with PMLD students ahead of our Festival in May 22. Special Olympics delivered the event and the leaders present have committed to supporting the actual festival in May.
3rd March 2022 - Panathlon Dry Southbank Humber Finals
This event sees the winning schools - both mainstream and SEN and Special Schools take part in their respective competitions to be crowned Humber Champions and have the option to go on to the Regional Round. The 8 qualifying school take part in 8-10 activities gaining points at each station with the overall winner going through to the next round. This is part of a National Competition and schools can go right through to the National Final in London.
