Insight

This objective is about creating a shared deep understanding of the people and place of the Humber and using that understanding to inform policy and practice across the Humber area.

The year saw a focus on connecting with local partners to deepen our understanding of the context in which each partner operates to improve our ability to connect partners to each other.

We also developed our approach to measurement, evaluation and learning and our understanding of the complexity of sport and physical activity across the Humber.

What we delivered:

Children and Young People Mapping Tool

The mapping tool is an interactive map that you can use to overlay different data sets (for example Indices of multiple deprivation, national child measurement programme, free school meal entitlement) to create a deeper understanding of different groups/demographics and where they live.

Narrative Tool

This insight tool tells the story of inactivity across the Humber. It helps us identify the groups of people and places we are not currently reaching - those for who an active life is not yet an easy option.

By sharing this insight, we want to lay the foundations for us all to build our knowledge and understanding of the inactivity challenge across the Humber and highlight how much there is to do to achieve our aim of making the Humber a place where everyone is active every day.

It’s up to us all to work together. Finding ways to break the persistent and unjust links to inactivity that exist in our communities and making an active life the appealing and easy option for all.

Insight is presented under a series of different headings which can be explored on their own or as part of a collective, dependent on your area of

interest.

  • Overview of physical activity

  • Understanding inequalities

  • Children and young people (aged 5-16)

  • Young and middle-aged adults (aged 16-54)

  • Mid-life and older adults (aged 55 and over)

Use the menu headings at the top of this page to navigate your way around this tool.

Data within this tool is predominantly taken from Sport England’s Active Lives Surveys (the Active Lives Adults Survey, which is published twice a year, and the Active Lives Children and Young People Survey, published annually). These surveys measure the activity levels of people across England. This is supplemented with other data sources to help build greater understanding of activity levels for specific population groups.

Sources are listed within the text. Dates such as (Nov 2019/20) indicate the source is Active Lives and the year(s) quoted refer to the relevant data release.

Exploring data on maps

Maps, such as the inactivity map below, can help us explore data sets by local area. These maps are interactive and allow us to zoom in and out to get as much or as little detail as we need.  To make the map bigger, click on the ‘Expand’ arrows in the top right-hand corner. Then by clicking on an area of interest, a pop-up box will appear containing data relevant to that area.

The maps may take a few moments to load (dependent on your internet speed).  Please be patient and wait for the map to fully appear before you attempt to click on it.  In the unlikely event that a map doesn’t load, please exit, then re-enter the insight tool to clear any errors.

What impact has our work had?

Our insight events have been well received and we have engaged 118 people. The post briefing feedback had an NPS score of +60, a score that is considered excellent. Some of the things our partners said about our briefings are;

Business Meeting
Person Checking Data
"A really good, insightful and challenging session."
Business Meeting
"Informative and easy to engage with."
Chart on the digital tablet screen.
"Really useful presentation and discussion."

Our partners are using the local area insight in the planning for their Physical Activity Partnership and to address and rethink their offers.

The School Games events include targeted delivery. This includes the type of activity being delivered with lots of fun, social come and try it events. Where possible, events have been moved to be closer to areas with low family affluence scores and the schools who have more pupils from low family affluence scores have been targeted.

For the Opening Schools Facilities Funding, the children and young people mapping tool was utilised so that we could target the schools who had the highest proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals.
