Introduction

2021-22 reflecting on another unprecedented year

2021-22 was a challenging year for everyone across the Humber involved in sport and physical activity and the strength of the network shone through. As a network we showed by working together, how our resilience and adaptability continued to create the conditions for the Humber to become a more physically active place.

Active Humber played an important role in working alongside partners to address the factors preventing people from being physically active. In many cases this took us into new spaces, places, and partnerships as we plugged gaps and sought to be as helpful as possible at a time when the health and wellbeing of our population was the highest priority for the country.

We wanted Active Humber to be an asset to support the sport and physical activity network across the Humber.  This meant being proactive in helping to progress local priorities as well as supporting our partners in sharing the challenges they faced.

We played a key role during the pandemic to support the health of our communities from those struggling the most to remain active and supporting the local community groups they trust, to system partners, funders and organisations that typically haven’t worked together before.

We remained focussed on driving positive change through sport and physical activity at the core of what we do, and its importance more than ever to help the Humber community to be active and make positive changes to improve their health and wellbeing.

A series of causes have emerged from across the network that matter at a local level and the value of using the power of sport and physical activity to make a positive difference in people’s lives around.

  • Changing the culture around an ageing society

  • Helping those with a disability and or long-term health condition to be more active

  • Supporting vulnerable young people and families

  • Creating an equitable and anti-racist society

  • Limiting the negative impact of climate change

Our aim over the year was to despite the circumstances we faced, to bring out the best of the network. We did this by helping people to connect and learn in the online world, this encouraged us to support others to take the lead on physical activity, and to promote a more dynamic and locally based delivery structures for everyone to benefit from.
